Desktop Development

Some work belongs on the desktop: tools that read local files, talk to hardware, run without a reliable network, or need the speed and control a browser cannot offer. We build Windows, macOS and Linux software and the installers and update pipelines that keep it current.

What you get

  • Applications for Windows, macOS and Linux as the project requires
  • Integration with local hardware, devices and the file system
  • Installers and an automatic update process
  • Documentation and a repository you own
  • Support for new operating system versions as they appear

A good fit when

  • Staff rely on software that runs on their machines, such as specialist or internal tools
  • The application must work with scanners, printers, instruments or other hardware
  • An older desktop program needs to be modernised or moved to new platforms

How a project runs

Four steps, no surprises.

Each stage ends with something you can read, try or approve, so you always know where things stand.

  1. Talk

You describe the problem. We ask questions until we both understand it.

    You get

    • A written summary of the problem and the goal
    • Honest options and trade-offs
    • A straight answer on whether we are the right fit

    We need from you

A short brief, any existing systems and your deadlines.

  2. Scope

We turn the conversation into a plan you can approve.

    You get

    • What gets built and in what order
    • A cost and timing estimate
    • Risks and assumptions listed up front

    We need from you

Your sign-off on scope and priorities.

  3. Build

Working software in short cycles, so you see progress and can change course.

    You get

    • Something you can try at the end of each cycle
    • Regular progress updates
    • Tested, documented code in your own repository

    We need from you

Quick feedback and one decision-maker we can reach.

  4. Support

We stay on to run, fix and extend what we shipped.

    You get

    • Deployment and a clean handover
    • Monitoring, fixes and updates
    • Room to add features or extra engineers later

    We need from you

Report issues by email and we pick them up.

Common questions

When is a desktop application a better choice than a web application?

When the software needs direct access to hardware or local files, has to keep working without a network connection, or needs performance that a browser cannot provide. For most other cases a web application is easier to deploy and update.

How do users receive updates?

We build an update process into the application and its installer, so new versions reach users automatically instead of through manual downloads.
